Midwives are the only care providers who offer home birth as an option to low risk healthy pregnant people. Talk to your midwife about what option is best for you.
Research demonstrates that home birth is at least as safe as hospital birth. According to the Association of Ontario Midwives: In more than 20 years Ontario midwives have attended over 49,000 home births, and now attend about 4,000 annually.
Midwives are trained to provide all the necessary care and support that you will need at your home birth. The equipment they bring along with them to home births is equivalent to what would be found in a community hospital, including oxygen, medications to stop bleeding, and sterile instruments.
Clients who choose home birth like the comfort of being in familiar surroundings. Many pregnant people feel more confident and relaxed when they are able to access their own food, bed, and bathroom during labour. If you have a home birth the range of pain relief options available to you will include things such as massage, shower/bathing, and sterile water injections. You can only access an epidural in hospital.
With a home birth your primary midwife will monitor both you and your baby during your labour. A second midwife will arrive close to the end of your labour to assist the primary midwife with the birth and take care of your baby immediately after they are born. A midwife will walk you through what to expect at a home birth, what equipment is brought, the safety of home birth, reasons to transfer into hospital, and how emergencies are handled.
A couple who had a home birth will come to talk about their experience and answer your questions.

“Amazing care. Always focused on autonomous care of both mom and baby. They are always ready with information to help parents make informed choices. I had 3 beautiful home births with several of their midwives. Sad that I won't be back again!”

“I had a wonderful experience with Burlington & Area Midwives. Being a first time mom, I had a lot of questions. My midwives always took the time to answer my questions and put my mind at ease. I also never felt rushed during my check-ups. I loved that they come to your home to check on the baby after birth. This was particularly helpful since my daughter was born in the middle of a very cold January. The extra support and care I received from my midwives made my birth experience a great one! I will definitely be coming back for our second child.”
L. Denley
“Had one hospital birth that went very smooth through my family doctor then had 3 home births with their caring and competent staff. I highly recommend these midwives as they make each birth a truly beautiful experience. Felt very confident in their abilities and loved the personal and non rushed appointments where I felt comfortable asking anything. Amazing practice!!!”

Our midwives hold hospital privileges at Joseph Brant Hospital and have been part of the Maternal and Child team since 1999. They are well integrated into the professional team and BAM midwives sit on a number of hospital committees.
Your midwife works collaboratively with obstetricians, nurses, family physicians, pediatricians, anesthetists and lactation consultants, both in the hospital setting and in the community. Your midwife is an independent practitioner who, just like a doctor, can admit and discharge you from hospital and provide primary care. Clients in midwifery care have lower rates of interventions such as c-section, episiotomy, forceps or vacuum delivery. Midwifery clients also typically have a shorter hospital stay. Healthy postpartum clients and babies are then discharged to receive follow-up care in the community from midwives.

“Having experienced a complicated birth ending up in a c-section. Having my midwife with me every step of the way, caring, explaining and assisting the doctor's, created an atmosphere of calmness and confidence I would not have otherwise experienced.”
C. Gaizutis
“I recieved exceptional care from the women at Burlington and Area Midwives. I have three children , all born at Jo Brant, and each delivery went smoothly. The appointments, both pre and postnatal, were thorough, and never rushed. I felt confident in my care and like my opinions were listened to and respected. I received lots of breastfeeding support and encouragement when I needed it.”
C. Schneider
“I loved the continuity of care, the freedom I had during the delivery in the hospital, and the fact that they came to my house after the birth to do follow-ups on my son and me.”
